NATS Incorporated Introduces New and Affordable Nuclear Laboratory System for Students and Teachers Interested in Basic Nuclear Science Education

NATS Incorporated in Middletown, Connecticut has introduced the latest affordable Nuclear Laboratory Station for all experiments required in most introductory to intermediate level courses in nuclear science or engineering. This system is designed for students and teachers interested in Nuclear Science Education.

The newly introduced NATS student radiation counting system provides the ultimate in nuclear lab systems for studying the characteristics of radiation. It combines the capabilities of multiple systems sold commercially, and integrates the features of Geiger Mueller and basic sodium iodide experiments for students into a single station. It is provided with a superior software application and user interface. And note to mention a brand new revised Laboratory manual that contains all popular nuclear science experiments.

The NATS Student Radiation Counter is equipped with an internal high voltage supply and preamplifier, and allows operation with optional NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors for gross gamma counting.

All controls and indications (with the exception of per-event clicks) are performed through the included NATS Student Software application. Externally, the only control is the on/off switch! Features of the instrument and software system include preset time acquisitions, multiple sequential acquisitions, a digital ratemeter with audible clicks and adjustable integration time, flexible high voltage plateau utility, and digitally controlled high voltage and threshold.

The NATS EDUC-1510 system includes a large volume Geiger-Mueller detector for improved efficiency, a 6-position constant-geometry stand, USB and serial interface for PC, software for full computer control and data transfer, three License-exempt radioisotope sources, 20 piece precision absorber set, lab manuals on CD, power supply, and cables. The EDUC-1520 system is the same but comes with a 1” by 1” NaI(Tl) detector instead of the GM detector.

Software is compatible with Windows XP and higher. Data files are saved in spreadsheet-compatible format for importing into most common spreadsheets. This allows the student to perform calculations and graph the results for printing and reports beyond those included in the application.

The constant-geometry stand is solidly made from aluminum. It holds the detector in a fixed location above (and facing towards) the sample. Sample trays can be slid into one of six slots, each separated by one cm. Two sample trays are included. The first is aluminum with an indentation on one side that is sized to fit a standard planchette. An additional included insert holds a standard 1” source in an effectively “weightless” configuration to minimize the effects of scatter.

The system comprises all that is needed for a complete experimental station except the computer.

NATS currently offers instruments and systems used in all aspects of nuclear radiation detection and analysis. These areas include nuclear spectroscopy, radiation dosimetry, health physics, environmental analysis and in medical and teaching applications. Users for these systems include nuclear power plants, homeland security agencies, customs and border patrol, national atomic energy agencies, nuclear regulatory agencies, hospitals, universities and in research establishments worldwide.
